Decadal Variation of Atmospheric Rivers in Relation to North Atlantic Tripole SST Mode

نویسندگان

چکیده

The North Atlantic tripole (NAT) is the leading mode of sea-surface temperature (SST) in decadal time scale. Although NAT forced by oscillation (NAO), it also has an effect on atmosphere; for example, early winter SST signal can influence storm tracks March. As not only changes baroclinicity lower layer but modifies moisture being released into atmosphere, we surmise that impact transport and atmospheric rivers Using ERA5 reanalysis data, variations Atmospheric Rivers (ARs) boral relation to phases were studied. During positive phase, central western increases humidity causes anticyclonic wind response, which enhances northeastward moisture. a result, ARs tend be longer more toward northwestern Europe. This enhanced extreme rain UK Norway. negative anomalies south east provide moisture, induce southward shift enhance Iberian Peninsula. Gulf Stream (GS) front stronger during increasing frequency enlarging rate ARs.

The Relation between Decadal Variability of Subtropical Mode Water and the North Atlantic Oscillation*

The Bermuda station ‘‘S’’ time series has been used to define the variability of subtropical mode water (STMW) from 1954 to 1995. This record, which shows decadal variability at a nominal period of about 12–14 yr, has been used as a baseline for seeking correlation with large-scale atmospheric forcing and with decadal north–south excursions of the Gulf Stream position defined by the subsurface ...

Springtime Atmospheric Responses to North Atlantic SST Anomalies in Idealized GCM Experiments: Northern Hemisphere Circulation and North American Precipitation

In this study, a series of experiments using idealized sea surface temperatures (SST), land and orography are performed to examine the interactions between the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), continents and major orography. Three sets of experiments are done using an increasingly realistic surface boundary (aqua-planet, land without orography and land with orography) and run using perp...

The response of Iberian rivers to the North Atlantic Oscillation

In this study we analyzed the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the streamflow in 187 sub-basins of the Iberian Peninsula. Monthly and one-month lagged correlations were conducted to assess the spatiotemporal extent of the NAO influence on Iberian river discharges. Analysis of the persistence of the winter NAO throughout the year was also undertaken, together with analysis of...

Two distinct roles of Atlantic SSTs in ENSO variability: North Tropical Atlantic SST and Atlantic Nio

[1] Two distinct roles of the Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs), namely, the North Tropical Atlantic (NTA) SST and the Atlantic Niño, on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability are investigated using the observational data from 1980 to 2010 and coupled model experiments. It appears that the NTA SST and the Atlantic Niño can be used as two independent predictors for predicting...
